What's Involved in a Home EV Charger Installation?

Every home is a bit different, but the general process is the same. Here's how it works when you book with Plateau Electrical:

1. Get in touch and get a quote Give us a call or fill in the online quote form. We'll ask a few questions about your vehicle, your switchboard, and where you'd like the charger installed. In most cases we can provide a fixed quote within 24 hours.

2. Site assessment Our electrician will visit your home to check your existing electrical setup. We'll confirm whether your switchboard can handle the additional load or whether a switchboard upgrade is needed. We'll also confirm the best location for the charger — usually in or near the garage or carport.

3. Installation We run the dedicated circuit from your switchboard to the charger location, mount and wire the charger, and commission it according to manufacturer specifications. Most standard installations take half a day.

4. Testing and handover We test the full system, walk you through how to use the charger and app (if applicable), and make sure you're completely comfortable before we leave. We clean up after ourselves — no mess, no fuss.

If your home needs a switchboard upgrade or three-phase power to support a faster charger, we handle that too. It's all part of the service.

How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost?

The cost depends on the charger you choose and how complex the electrical work is at your home. As a rough guide:

The charger itself typically ranges from around $750 for an entry-level unit (like a Tesla Wall Connector or basic Ocular) up to $2,000 for a premium three-phase charger like the Zappi or Evnex X22.

Installation starts from around $600–$800 for a straightforward job where your switchboard is in good shape and the charger is going on a wall close to the board. If the run is longer, or your switchboard needs upgrading, installation can be $2,000–$3,000 or more.

All up, most homeowners on the Northern Beaches and North Shore are looking at roughly $1,500 to $4,000 for a fully installed home EV charger — depending on the unit and the complexity of the job.

We always provide a fixed, upfront quote before we start, so there are no surprises.

FAQs

Q: How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

The total cost depends on the charger you choose and the electrical work required at your property. The charger itself ranges from around $750 (for a Tesla Wall Connector or entry-level unit) to $2,000 (for a premium three-phase charger). Installation typically runs from $600 to $3,000 depending on how far the charger is from your switchboard and whether any upgrades are needed. Most homeowners end up paying between $1,500 and $4,000 all up. We always provide a fixed quote before starting.

Q: Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always, but it depends on the age and capacity of your current switchboard. Older switchboards — especially in homes built before the 1990s — may not have the capacity to safely support a dedicated EV charger circuit. We assess this during the quoting process and can handle the switchboard upgrade as part of the same job if needed.

Q: How long does it take to install a home EV charger?

A standard installation usually takes around half a day — roughly 3 to 5 hours. If additional work is needed (such as a switchboard upgrade or a long cable run), it may take a full day. We'll confirm the timeframe in your quote.

Q: Can I charge my EV from solar panels?

Yes. If you have a solar system, certain chargers — like the Zappi and Evnex E2 — can harvest surplus solar energy to charge your vehicle during the day. This is a great way to reduce your charging costs and make the most of your solar investment. We'll help you choose a charger that's compatible with your existing solar and battery setup.

Q: Do all electric vehicles use the same charger plug?

Almost. About 90% of EVs sold in Australia use a Type 2 plug for AC charging, which has become the standard. This means most home wall chargers are compatible with most vehicles. We'll confirm compatibility with your specific car when we quote.

Q: Can I charge my car from a normal power point?

Yes, most EVs come with a portable charger that plugs into a standard 10-amp household power point. However, it's very slow — typically less than 10 km of range per hour of charging. A dedicated wall charger on its own circuit can deliver up to 50–75 km of range per hour, which is why most EV owners opt for a proper home installation.

Q: Can EV chargers be installed outside?

Yes. All reputable EV chargers on the market are IP-rated for outdoor installation, so they can be safely mounted on an external wall or a post near your driveway. That said, we recommend installing undercover where possible — it extends the charger's life and makes plugging in more comfortable on rainy days.

Q: Can I lock my EV charger?

Yes, most modern wall chargers have security features built in. Depending on the model, you can lock the charger via the app, a PIN code, an RFID card, or a physical key. This is especially useful if your charger is in a shared or street-accessible area.

Q: What happens if my EV runs out of battery on the road?

Most EV manufacturers offer roadside assistance, and services like the NRMA now have dedicated EV support units. Public charging stations are becoming more common across Sydney — the PlugShare map is a handy tool for finding them. The best prevention, of course, is charging overnight at home so you start each day with a full battery.

Q: Where are public EV charging stations near the Northern Beaches?

The Northern Beaches has a growing network of public chargers. Northern Beaches Council has been rolling out streetside pole-mounted chargers through a trial with Intellihub, and there are public chargers at various shopping centres and car parks across the area. Tesla's Supercharger network is also expanding. For the most up-to-date map, check PlugShare.

Q: Do you install EV chargers on the Northern Beaches and North Shore?

Absolutely — it's our core service area. We're based in Collaroy Plateau and install EV chargers right across the Northern Beaches (Manly, Dee Why, Mona Vale, Frenchs Forest, Avalon, and everywhere in between) and the North Shore (Mosman, Chatswood, Lane Cove, Pymble, Gordon, Hornsby, and surrounding suburbs).

Q: Who should install my EV charger?

EV charger installation should always be carried out by a licensed electrician with experience in EV charging systems. Look for someone who is accredited with the charger manufacturer (e.g., a certified Tesla installer), has strong Google reviews, and provides a clear written quote. Plateau Electrical ticks all of those boxes.
